What to Bring What NOT To Bring
  • Oil based paints
  • Oven cleaners
  • Pool chemicals
  • Adhesives
  • Mixed gasoline
  • Preservatives
  • Fluorescent Bulbs
  • Pesticides
  • Muriatic acid
  • Rodent killers
  • Herbicides
  • Drain cleaners
  • Photo chemicals
  • Varnish
  • NiCD batteries
  • Flares (burn them)
  • Ammunition (bring to Police Department
  • Used oil and auto batteries (landfill/transfer station)
  • Old smoke detectors (return to manufacturer)
  • Propane tanks (landfill/transfer station)
  • Latex paints and latex driveway sealer (see below)

All paints/sealers that can be cleaned up with soap and water are Latex.  To dispose of small quantities, add kitty litter to the can and leave open until completely dry.  For larger quantities, use several sturdy plastic trash bags to line a box and alternate paint and kitty litter or shredded newspaper and let stand until crunchy dry.  Place dried cans in the bag and seal.  Dispose of dried paint products at your town landfill or transfer station.

Souhegan Regional Landfill District

The District is comprised of four towns:  Amherst, Brookline, Hollis and Mont Vernon.  Together we look for the best, most economical, and most environmentally sound ways to dispose of or recycle our solid waste

We need your help!  Please refer to the table above when wondering what items may be recycled and what needs to be done before they go into the various bins.

Please flatten cans, plastic jugs and cardboard boxes.  This allows us to transport more in fewer loads, reducing transportation costs.

While one may look at empty bottles, cans and paper as merely "trash", these items are in fact the raw materials used to manufacture new goods.  For this reason, cans, bottles and plastic containers must be rinsed.

It is also important to properly separate recyclables by putting them into the correct bins.  For example, plastic bags are a serious contaminate in the newspaper bin as the plastic interferes with the manufacture of new paper products from the newspapers.

In order for recycling to work, we must have a market for our recyclables, which means having "clean" loads that will be acceptable for recycling.
